It's almost a year now since the advanced Liandri Corporation robot known
as the "Warboss" or "War Machine Boss" entered the Grand Tournament. While
successful in the Deathmatch, it was unable to enter the lucrative team
ladders, since the War Machines, its squad of robotic minions, were still held
in stasis, entombed in a ZIP-compressed archive on
a near-forgotten web server.
Not any more... it appears they've escaped...
The War Machine is a model by Epic Games, which I found in PSK format in one of their skeletal animation tutorials. I assume it's from Playstation 2 UT. It uses the Male Soldier skin layout, and suitably robotic Male Soldier skins work on it with minimal conversion - its default skin is the popular 'War Machine' skin from basic UT, and I've also put together two community skin packs (Hardened Steel and Dark Iron).
This model requires Unreal Tournament, upgraded to version 436 or later (download the patch from www.unrealtournament.com or a mirror download like File Planet or Unreality), and Advanced Model Support version 110 or later by Simon "Psychic_313" McVittie (download it from Paradox Productions or a mirror download).
Unzip with Winzip, Power Archiver or similar, and double-click the UMOD. Unreal Tournament version 436 (or later) and Advanced Model Support version 110 (or later) are required.
If you have problems with UMOD files, try these pages:
Also, make sure you have all the required files.
Unzip with InfoZip or similar, then install the UMOD with UMODPack (you'll need Perl to run UMODPack) or some other UMOD reader (apparently Westlake Interactive made an official Mac UMOD reader). If you have problems, try http://www.pseudorandom.co.uk/paradox/unreal/utmodsfaq/ or (for Mac users) osX.
Install as described above, then check the [Engine.GameEngine] section of UnrealTournament.ini (in the System subfolder of your UT folder). You must have the following lines to use this model:
ServerPackages=AdvancedModelSupport ServerPackages=PS2WarMachine ServerPackages=PS2WarMachineSkins ServerPackages=SoldierSkins
If you paste the lines out of this file, make sure you don't accidentally add a space on the end (some web browsers do this).
Linux users: the relevant file is $HOME/.loki/ut/System/UnrealTournament.ini, where $HOME is the home directory of the user the server will run as. If this file doesn't exist, copy the one from /usr/local/games/ut/System.
I do not claim any artistic input into this model - I just coded and imported it, and added the miscellaneous stuff like talktextures and a HUD "status doll". The source model is freely available (URLs below), while the skin is built into UT (I do not distribute the skin textures to reduce the size of the download; they are dynamically loaded from UT's skin files as needed).
Depending on your site's policy, you may wish to post this model without a review. I would suggest treating it like a modification to an existing model (like UsAaR33's Bonus Pack 1 fixes or my Bonus Pack 4 fixes).
There are some screenshots and images in the UMOD file.
Please see the Skinning SDK, which is also included in the UMOD file (installed as Help\AdvancedModels\WarMachine-SkinningSDK.html).
